History was indeed made last week as the University of Nigeria, in its quest for excellence became the first University in Nigeria to conduct a full biometric election for its Student Union Government (SUG), it was indeed a sight to behold where students, in their numbers gathered at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, the venue of the election exercise to participate in what has gone down the annals of history as the first, fully automated student government election of any university in Nigeria.
The exercise, which recorded many first, chief among which is the live-streaming and collection of results in real-time, which was gleefully observed by all and sundry at the Situation Room, which was strategically located at the ICT main office of the Zenith Bank Building.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles A. Igwe, in his characteristic manner went round the venue of the election in his fatherly role to observe and comment on the state of the elections. At the library, the Vice Chancellor observe the peaceful conduct of the election, and complemented the organizers for staying through to the character of the university. He stressed the need for noninterference in the election of candidates and emphasized, as Vice Chancellor, he was mostly concern about the safety of the students and the process, stating that he was ever willing to work with who so ever the students settled on as their representatives.
The Vice chancellor was also at the ICT office, which doubled as the Situation Room for the election, where the same message was repeated. The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Edwin Omeje, who is the chairman of the election was on hand to welcome the vice Chance and his entourage included the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Pat Okpoko to the Situation Room. Mr. Ani Stephen, a student of the Department of Political Science emerged as the New SUG President.
