The Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Nigeria was established in 1966. Formal training of medical students did not start until after the civil war in 1970 when the first batch of medical students was admitted. The School operated under the laws of Eastern Region and East Central State of Nigeria until 1978 when the Federal Government of Nigeria promulgated the statute No. 2 of the University of Nigeria Act. This statute established the Faculty as an integral part of the University of Nigeria. The Faculty has grown from strength to strength since its inception. Her students’ population has increased from the first intake of sixty (60) students to a level that we now graduate on average, one hundred and fifty (150) students every year. The number of Departments and sub-Departments has increased from initial four to twenty, (4 to 20). The Faculty evolved into a full-fledged College of Medicine in 1984 with the amendment of the University of Nigeria Act by the Federal Government. The College now has three Faculties and trains not only Medical Doctors but also professionals in the allied fields of medicine. The Faculty also runs postgraduate programmes up to doctorate degree in some specialties. Our undergraduate programme includes both 5 year & 6-year programs leading to the award of MB.BS degree of the University. Our average class strength is 150 students. Ninety percent of our students are admitted into the six-year program. They spend the first year (pre-med) doing Biology, Physics and Chemistry at A-Level. The students admitted into the 5-year programme normally would have passed Biology, Physics and Chemistry at A-Level before applying for admission. After the pre-med, our students spend their initial 2 years in the basic sciences/pre-clinical departments while the last 3 years are spent in the clinical departments. The curriculum is structured in such a way that our graduates are well prepared to meet the medical needs of the local population in Nigeria as well as be able to pursue post graduate training either locally or abroad. We place a lot of emphasis on clinical exposure while at the same time not neglecting the basic sciences foundation. On graduation, our students spend 12 months doing pre-registration internship training before they are certified to practice unsupervised as medical officers. In meeting the basic medical manpower needs of the country, the Faculty has trained graduates that continue to excel both locally and internationally in all spheres of Medicine. Our staff have been in the forefront of achievements in Medicine in Nigeria. We undertook the first open heart surgery in Sub Saharan Africa, we are the designated center of excellence in Nigeria for cardiovascular diseases, we carried out the first successful separation of Siamese twins in Sub Saharan Africa and has had experience in 4 such cases, we have successfully delivered and nurtured the only quintuplets in Nigeria. Our departments and staff are world renowned centers and authorities respectively in various research fields including Infectious Diseases, Onchocerciasis, Malaria, Hypertension and Cancer.
